Thought Of The Week:

"We can make ourselves miserable or make ourselves strong; either way the amount of work is the same..."

 - Carlos Castaneda

Hey,

As we begin the final countdown to the period of time we call "The Holidays" there is often a bittersweet feeling of wonder and wistfulness isn't there? Sometimes is hard to sort it all out. We go to parties...we shop for gifts or we choose some other way to acknowledge the people in our lives.

How many people do you shop for? What if you just said "no" to the whole shopping thing and instead wrote a personal note to the five most important people in your life?

I'm not suggesting you actually stop reading this, go get a piece of paper and a pen, write out a short appreciative note fold it up, put it in an envelope address it, lick the stamp and send it. But just consider for a moment, what would that  be like?

You'd have more time. You'd feel less stressed out. You'd use less gas driving around. You'd stand on line a lot less. You'd change your bio chemistry positively...

And the world economy would probably collapse!

No particular point here. Just, well, December has always been an economically challenging time for me. It always seemed like no matter what business I was in, the money always dried up at this time of year. So I used to beat myself up for not giving my kids more "stuff". The Holidays were a time when I could reflect deeply on the fact that I was a loser as a Dad and in pretty much every other way.

Then one day a friend said to me, "Hey think of it this way, You're a way better dad than Elvis!"

In NLP we call this a "reframe." It's a way of turning your thinking on it's head to challenge a pattern of thought.

And you know as I considered it, I realized I WAS a way better dad than Elvis! For one thing I'm still alive!  Just consider for a moment what a gift it is for your family to have you to talk to and be with.

So this week if you catch yourself thinking you're not a good enough parent (or person) or whatever, just remember, You are way better than Elvis!

Thanks for being here!

-Mark

Also on a more profound note, one of my personal favorites "Gabriel's Song of Delight" (2 versions) and another love song, "What Would It Be Like...".
