Commentary:
I live in a historic brownstone overlooking New Haven's Wooster
Square Park. For about a week every April the Cherry Trees
surrounding the perimeter of the park bloom all at once. Something
about it changes not only the hard edged urban landscape but the
people suddenly become friendlier and more open. We walk around in
wide eyed wonder smiling at each other. It's wonderful.
The first trees
have opened. The rest should follow either Friday or over the
weekend. If you are in Connecticut you have to come by and check it
out. If you can't at least you can see some photos of last year's
blooming that I put to the song.
I can't wait to
get out there with my video camera and actually capture the exact
scenes described in the song.
Enjoy!
Here are the
lyrics
The 21st of April (Cherry Blossom
Song) 4/21/05
It’s the 21st of April
on a Thursday afternoon
I am looking out my window
At the cherry trees in bloom
And I’m thinking of you…
The park is full of lovers
Walking hand in hand
The scent of Spring is rising up
Like perfume from the land
& I am dreaming of you…
I know that you are coming
I’m listening for your step (upon the stair)
And I am wondering
If you are aware
Of how much I long to share this day with you…
And the people walking dogs
Seem to wag their tails
As they speak with perfect strangers
To the tune of the church bells
And the other sounds that softly call the night
The statue of Columbus
Takes a solemn stance
As he gazes towards the New World
While the cherry blossoms dance
And the moon begins to fill the sky
I know that you are coming
I’m listening for your step (upon the stair)
And I am wondering
If you are aware
Of how much I long to share this night with you
Oh my love where are you?…
